What does Seriph mean to you?

"Seriph" was actually a misspelling of the word "seraph" or "seraphim" which means the highest order of angel in heaven from back in the middle ages. I was doing my 3rd all-nighter in studio back in 1997 or so when it came to me.

How did you get started with your work?

I've been drawing since I was 1 (according to my mom) but the vector style I sort of "do" now started developing about 3 to 4 years ago with a wacom mixed with boredom.

Where do you look to for inspiration?

Anywhere and everywhere: music, film, art, nature, and my strange imagination. Anything from Tim Burton, Thundercats and Akira to dj shadow and Rachmaninov.

Working at Big Spaceship must be inspiring to be surrounded by that much talent, What is a day in the life like at the Spaceship?

Its pretty insane to think that I'm getting to work with some of the most talented people from around the globe. I find it pretty inspiring; I just want to take it all in and learn everything I can. My usual day is filled with, honestly, just either designing, illustrating or brainstorming.
What do you like to do when you aren't being an astronaut at Big Spaceship?

Sometimes I just work out some stuff out on the piano. But also a decent amount of drinkin up a storm, relaxing at home, or cooking for my boyfriend.

Are you formally trained in the arts? If so do you feel that you learned as much as you wanted?

I did attend school for design, where I also took numerous art, music and business classes. I don't think you ever really stop learning, especially in the digital arena.

What are some of your favorite mediums to use with your art and how did you progress towards such an organic style of illustration?

I used to do a lot of work in graphite, coloured pencil and charcoals (and if I ever get off my lazy bum, I'll be scanning posting those works). My style has always been "organic" and it has just sort of translated itself into vector form. I love being able to ctrl+z so I don't do as much non vector art as I used to.
How much of a role does music play in the creative process and what are you listening to these days?

It can really make a difference. Much of my visuals are inspired by the music I'm listening to, so I like to listen to a wide variety of things. These days that ranges from Diplo, DJ shadow and NIN to Thomas Newman and Danny Elfman.

Where do you see your personal work heading with Seriph? Can you tell me about any upcoming projects you want to do?

I would like to one day to do a really awesome print campaign for a sleek, interesting clothing line…or something…

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to learn how to illustrate at your level? Can you give us some insight as to what is involved in your creative process?

Oh wow, never heard it referred to as a "level" before! Heee I just followed something stylistically that vibed with me. For me, it's a combination of visually composing an image and then translating it onto paper, illustrator etc. Many of the illustrations I've done are representative of feelings or abstract concepts.
Who are you working with on personal projects and do you enjoy the random creativity that comes from collaborating with somebody?

It can be very rewarding because you see what someone else would do with something you made and vice versa. The results are usually things that neither person would have done, which makes for a broader experience over all.

Anything blow your mind lately as in change your perspective on things - Movie or Book or anything like that?

Even though I read this about a year ago, it still blows my mind: Angels in America by Tony Kushner. It was turned into a mini-series on HBO as well, but the play is stunningly simple, elegant and complex all at once. I've never seen such profound and effective use of words in any literature to describe and assess the emotional spectrum of humanity.

I noticed that most of your work features female subject matter

I usually illustrate the female figure, honestly, because I like illustrating flow-y fabric that most likely, a woman would be wearing.
Do you incorporate any of your dreams into your art?

Sometimes, though much of it stems from images I see in my own head, like a cinematographer on crack.

I love the random facts that you give out on your site - they are brilliant - where do you come up with this stuff?

Oh yes! Those! I find them on the internet. I'll see one I think is kind of hilarious and share it.

If you could have dinner with 6 people alive or dead, who would you invite to the table and what would you serve?

I would have to say (in no particular order) Salvador Dali, Trent Reznor, Tim Burton, Beethoven, Batman and my boyfriend Paul. :o)
