Bitshifter - Audio

1. Live audio/visuals with print on display is a great idea for an event. What started Bridge?

Bridge started from a vision after seeing way too many live shows. I realized that new media would always have a growing impact on live music, and the shows that used visuals always ended up higher on my "what a great show" list. Visuals in a live music show/performance environment always ended up making so much more sense that I decided to try something a bit different. If the space could be filled with great artwork and print design at a large scale that it no longer felt like a venue maybe we could create a new experience altogether.

2. Were artists given a theme or were the prints completely open?

Because the first Bridge happened a few months earlier than originally planned, the theme was left open and artists were able to create whatever they wanted to do. In the future they will be more theme focused, including the visuals and the music.

4. What can you tell us about Doctors Without Borders?

I personally think MSF is one of the greatest charities out there at the moment, especially with all the natural disasters that have occurred within the past few months. MSF does everything from working in refugee camps, emergency surgeries, vaccinations, and providing public health education. You can get more info at http://www.msf.ca

5. Is there artwork still available for sale?

Actually, all the artwork is still for sale. Each print is a one of a kind 6 foot by 4 foot piece. The ebay auction has been delayed a tiny bit due to the overwhelming schedule that the real world presents. Bridge was a side project for me that really turned out to be more work than originally expected. Probably 10 times more work, and because of that I have to now work 10 times harder to make up for it . The ebay auction and an updated site will be live as of May 20.

6. Is there a second BRIDGE being planned?

Yes and no. I love being so mysterious. At the moment the next Bridge is being researched and planned although I am not sure if it will be on the same scale as the first. There might be a few smaller live shows that will not contain artwork or visuals that I am putting together but once again nothing is locked in so id rather not talk about it yet.

7. Do you accept submissions from artists for upcoming events? What would you expect in potential work to be shown?

Unfortunately it is not a submission based event. But it shouldn't stop people from sending stuff because you never know.

8. The Church was an amazing location for Bridge. Any other great places you know of in Toronto or Montreal?

Well I cant take all the credit for the church. The reason the show was bumped up a few months was because of FITC and Shawn Pucknell who helped out a lot. The church basically killed 2 birds with stone. Giving somewhere for Bridge to take place while allowing FITC to be a great host to its guests. This city and Montreal have tons of great places. My personal favourites in Toronto include Magic Pony, Lees Palace and Xspace. Montreal is a totally different story since I haven't lived there in 3 years but I would have to say Foufs, Usine C and SAT.

9. Bitshifter and Flight404 killed the live audio/visual set. Bitshifter jammed on gameboy equipment to generate the audio while Flight 404 created visuals off of them. How the hell is that done?

I apologize in advance for going into detail about technologies I have a limited understanding of. Ill give it a shot, First u need a gameboy. any gameboy before advance. Then u have to find a blank cart that you can copy games to and download software to it. There are 2 main softwares that people use., Nanoloop or LSDJ and then it's a whole process of programming instruments, notes, patterns and sequences. It pretty much turns a gamboy into a bad ass loop machine. As far as the visuals, they were all programmed in processing to run off mic amplitudes. Im sorry if there is an error somewhere.

10. Any new audio or great movies to recommend?

Ive been eating up the sounds of treewave, DAT politics, Beans, Cex, kid 606 and Lo Bat. As far as movies go always been a fan of stop motion and im waiting for Nick Park's new feature full length, the new WWFT dvd is something everyone should look into and if you are into weird Japanese yakuza mayhem and you liked kill bill, the film Ichi the Killer is defiantly for you as long as you can handle some seriously gruesome scenes.
