When did you start shooting photography personally vs. professionally?
I bought my first camera in 1988 (nikon f3) I sold my first photograph in 2001 (some DJ portrait).
How did you transition toward directing?
I was asked by the aritsts that I was working with on still photos to create motion pieces. Though the process takes longer a motion piece is basically just 24 still photos per second. Persistence of vision kicks in and and makes it appear seamless. That's called "directing". Don't let anyone try to mystify the process further than that.
What kind of relationship do you develop with musicians or actors in order to pull their best performance?
I try to set up scenarios in which they can be themselves and, hopefully, transcend themselves. They have to bring a lot to the table though and well get what you give don't you?
Bells Portrait
How much room do you leave for improvisation during a shoot?
Tactical improvisation is the key to our paradoxical process.
Is it difficult to give up creative or technical control? How important is this when on set?
As the director the most important decisions are made before the shoot in picking who you work with...do you trust the artist? your crew? my ideology in art and life has always been that if I surround myself with people much smarter and more talented than I am then I'll be fine. It's worked out so far.
Please describe the creative process executed for:
Soft Gun Lilly: Flying Lotus

This project was the longest of any of our projects. We created a sculpture and systematically degraded it and photographed it over the course of 4 months. None of the people involved, Lotus, myself, Build, Commonwealth, knew where it was going to end. There was a great deal of excitment and exploration in that. And tension, which is good Those projects are few and far between.
Tricky
Tricky - Photo shoot

I met Tricky the day he showed up at the studio. He's a very down to earth guy and we had a great rapport. When we aren't shooting I spend most of my time in research and development....the tricky shots came at the end of a long R&D session. It's one of my favorite portrait sessions we've done.
Watch Battles ~ Atlas
Battles: Atlas - Watch video

I arrived at the warp office on a friday afternoon in the summer in NYC. Dave and Ian showed up, having driven 7 hours straight from the studio after just finishing recording this track they had. They spent over 20 hours just on the mix. The track was "Atlas" and we were the first to hear it. There was magic in the room. I instantly knew this was something special and we Battled for months over how to make a video for it. I think also I drank a Sparks after the meeting..never again..
What has been your greatest career challenge?
Well the greatest artistic challenge has been trying to make art as good as the artists I've been lucky enough to work with. Careers are for people who make a profit.
