Versus is the latest installation by David Letellier, combining robot mechanics within kinetic sound installations. Each sculpture is made of 12 triangular panels, hinged and powered by six linear actuators, controlled by custom software. At regular intervals, each sculpture produces a sound, simultaneously recorded and analyzed by the opposite sculpture, which then moves according to the frequencies of this sound. Like a feedback loop, it then plays back the recorded sound, with the errors and disturbances caused by the reverberating space and the installation’s visitors. By intervening in this conversation, the viewer becomes an actor, as he degrades the communication by his presence and the noises he produces. As the panels move back and forth at a pace determined by the environmental sound, they create a non-immediate interaction, where the imperfections of reproduction are becoming creative elements.
Beautiful … no make that gorgeous 2d animation and audio design from Toronto based Tendril and John Black’s Cypheraudio respectively; Composition in Red … a sound-synchronized logo reconstruction sequence … “Once the animation was complete, we sought out the musical wizardry of John Black who initially worked to find a tempo that worked with the flow of the visuals, and then gradually built up the final track in layers, adding sound design elements to synchronize with the different geometric elements.”

Quayola, a London based artist, has created a new multi-screen video-installation premiering on October 7-9, 2011 at the renowned Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille, France’s second museum after the Louvre, as the opening of their 2011-2012 season. Strata #4 is part of his on-going series of films, prints and site-specific installations for the project devised to challenge accepted perceptions of classical art, architecture and iconography. Quayola strips away outer layers of dramatic symbolism from masterpieces and explores the world beneath their figurative skins.
Quayola is screening Strata #3 in Ottawa tomorrow Sept 21 – 25 at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.

That typeface is beautiful too, designed by Pablo Abad. MadinSpain just held its sixth event, exploring and celebrating design and creativity … organized by Domestika.org.
