VERSUS . David Letellier

Versus is the latest installation by David Letellier, combining robot mechanics within kinetic sound installations. Each sculpture is made of 12 triangular panels, hinged and powered by six linear actuators, controlled by custom software. At regular intervals, each sculpture produces a sound, simultaneously recorded and analyzed by the opposite sculpture, which then moves according to the frequencies of this sound. Like a feedback loop, it then plays back the recorded sound, with the errors and disturbances caused by the reverberating space and the installation’s visitors. By intervening in this conversation, the viewer becomes an actor, as he degrades the communication by his presence and the noises he produces. As the panels move back and forth at a pace determined by the environmental sound, they create a non-immediate interaction, where the imperfections of reproduction are becoming creative elements.

The Nature of Things: Literally

Time and time again I’ve heard or read of designers/artists/creatives cite nature as one of their strongest influences. Taking a closer look at vertebrate that travel in groups, its hard not to be mesmerized and easy to see where offset keyframing and particle generation projects have been sourced. Its astounding the shapes these groups create and the often non-verbal communication that occurs among their participants, required in maintaining such uniform yet organic movement. Is there one one leader with all others following suit in a nano second offest manner? Is each member conscious of the overall shape the group makes and the path it follows?

I’ve seen this phenomenon from my balcony over the last couple of months, among small birds. No pattern ever seems to repeat itself. I wonder if there is rhyme or reason? Another great example to see here.

This all reminded me of Kozyndan‘s recent Hello Kitty: Fishy Greetings / Small Gift painting, and numerous other particle generated motion pieces.

So, if you have no plans on this Friday night, I reco burning a huge fat one and renting Disney’s Oceans for some fantastic inspiration. Probably the best documentary with the most beautiful cinematography I’ve ever seen. Although … this is a bit disturbing ; (
