Alexander McQueen x PUMA: The Book of Five Rings
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010
Inspired by the 17th-century ‘The Book of Five Rings‘ whereby the undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi outlines his philosophy for success in battle and in life, Sean Capone’s quintet of films transforms this concept into an intricately choreographed ballet of rhythmic motion. Fashion, like martial arts, appears in a continuous flow that is both elegant and effortless.
During the summer of 2009, SHOWstudio.com invited viewers worldwide to collaborate with Nick Knight, Alexander McQueen and PUMA in a unique competition designed to push the boundaries of filmmaking and fashion imagery creation to the very limit. Sean Capone, the winning filmmaker chosen by Nick Knight and Alexander McQueen, received the unique commission to direct the Alexander McQueen PUMA Spring/Summer 2010 art movie, showcased on SHOWstudio.com and visible in key fashion department stores and boutiques worldwide.

Tsutomu Miyajima: Pissenlit
Thursday, May 13th, 2010Pissenlit was created by Tsutomu Miyajima and Kouhei Nakama for http://www.wowid.jp — a site created by WOW Japan featuring personal works by eight of their designers/directors. The site is “… not only a pure attempt at different expression but also a competitive environment, which stimulates each designer to do their best and enhances their motivation.” Three designer projects have been uploaded to the WOWid site, the others being Suiren, created by Tomoya Kimpara and Otome created by Takuma Nakaji. The other five projects will be released throughout 2010. Regarding Pissenlit: “… the materials repeatedly self-duplicate, reintegrate and rearrange. These replications, stemming from the original, undergo continuous transformation as units that branch out into infinite variations. With Pissenlit we tried to show the regularity existing in these seemingly irregular fluctuations, which in time form into a fractural “ring”.”
Tsutomu Miyajima was also a designer on WOW’s incredible Infinity Citizen project, and the 2008 Tent London installation for Sony Ericsson called “Black and White“, as well as several other WOW projects.
We will continue to hightlight Japanese artists/graphic & motion designers and directors over the next couple of weeks … stay tuned.

Two Minutes
Monday, May 10th, 2010When I read “7D stop motion music video” in the description for 2 Minutes I thought it was a video in 7 dimension, just to find out it was actually shot with a Canon 7D; while the video, directed by Maxime Bruneel, is set in the ordinary 10 dimensional space we’re used to…
Extn. 21
Saturday, May 8th, 2010Extn.21 is a short film by Lizzie Oxby about “one man’s desire to be heard. The film uses an innovative blend of atmospheric stop-frame animation, live action performance (a live action head on a stop-frame puppet) and digital effects to create a dark world of uncertain reality. Here’s an extract from the film.”

Art of Miso
Monday, May 3rd, 2010
Art of Miso is the wonderful work of L.A based artist, sculptor, painter Miso … “Her art is often stimulated by her interpretation of the known and her experimentation with the unknown. Fascinated with ecocatastrophe, biology and the science of evolution, Miso has sought to fabricate a world in which strange creatures, born of her making, exist and thrive among us. These homunculi are organic representations of the term that provides her name.” Miso has an exclusive print up at Paper Tiger.

Brandt Peters
Friday, April 23rd, 2010
Brandt Peters is a self taught artist currently living in Tampa, FL. “The Subject of my paintings is a world of side-show icons, deviant Animalia, and ‘masked’ glorified cartoon alter egos. I utilize these icons and character cultures as antithetical counterparts to what we are lead to believe as being innocent and socially acceptable. Although misfits on the surface, a sense of relation is understood, secret from the public – we are all misfits; hiding behind animated personas, odd and beautifully unusual. Who is it that we relate to? The lonely little boy hiding in a bear suite, the evil lustful pool-hall wolf, the sexualized little girl who secretly wants more. The environment and its limited population are meant to conjure these questions, the viewers are confronted with finding their own answers.”
