Slanted Magazine has just announced their call for entries for the winter issue of Slanted Magazine #20, dedicated to Slab Serif/Egyptienne typefaces and related projects.
Slanted #20 will feature the so-called Egyptienne / Slab Serif typefaces. In early 19th Century the genre of serifenbetonte Linear-Antiqua emerged, broadly known as Egyptienne, Slab Serif, Serif or Mécanes Square outside German classification. Born during the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain, it was increasingly spread on advertising posters and flyers. Back in these days it was the main purpose of the slab serifs to attract attention by their strong visual expression.
With this issue we want to bring back some of this rather gone attention to the often characterful slab serifs. We are not only interested in Egyptienne typefaces that derive from classical Antiquas, but also interested in brand new slab serifs, that have been constructed or based on grotesques.
We’re looking for interesting fonts, projects and/or essays related to this issue. Submissions don’t have to be all typographic, we are also interested in projects from other design fields.
