Ryan Hooks: Cannes 2011 for Anthem Magazine

Brooklyn based Ryan Hooks directed, shot and edited this 2:45 film for Anthem Magazine. “The first year in Cannes, and must say I left with such a buzzing feeling. Such passionate people, and inspiring to say the least. As Werner Herzog put it best: “I am not an artist, I just aim to share the wonders of this world.” “

Very well shot and even better editing, really makes me want to go to Cannes.

Spike Jonze/Arcade Fire: Scenes From The Suburbs (full film)

Full movie is on youtube nowScenes From The Suburbs is an MJZ proudction directed by Spike Jonze and inspired by Arcade Fire‘s The Suburbs. The full 30 min film is now on youtube and was written by Arcade Fire’s Win and Will Butler who brought forth childhood memories of movies as kids late at night and only seeing the first half due to their parents walking in and sending them to bed. Win, Wil and Spike endevor into the emotions of a group of teens without delving too deep into plot leaving it somewhat unfinished.

Mirai Mizue: Modern & A long day of timbre

From Japanese animator Mirai Mizue, a massive amount of work: Modern … love how it turned out: “I finished this film in only two months after the completion of Playground. Inspired by optical illusions, like Escher’s paintings, I made the film using isometric drawings. my idea was to make a great film using only transformations of rectangular parallelepipeds. I applied the method of geometric animation, a technique used in Metropolis, in this film. Along with “cell” animation, I continue making films with the application of this method. (Hopefully, I will eventually discover a third alternative method to use in my films.)”

A long day of timbre is another amazing stop-motion short from Mirai Mizue, bringing a whole new perspective on psychedelia … again, the number of hours invested in this must have been quite high but I’m sure the gratification in the end was well worth it. Check out all of Mira’s videos on vimeo.

Cundari: BMW Concrete Walls

BMW Contrete Walls, created by Toronto based Cundari Advertising for BMW Canada. “The filrst film in our BMW MPowered campaign pits the precision driving of the BMW 1M against a series of concrete walls. After only two days, it was already the most popular automotive video on all of YouTube.”

I’m guessing this is entirely live action … buuuuut not entirely sure.

Tim Jockel: Holographic Fashion Show

Berlin based freelance designer Tim Jockel, who started out at Firstborn and now a member of infarbe, designed and completed production on the visuals for this Stefan Eckert fastion show. “The question was how to communicate the philosophy behind the new collection of German “Haute Couture” fashion designer Stefan Eckert in a better way. The answer was the world’s first complete 3D holographic fashion show. I teamed up with director Florian Sigl to create the visual concept for the show and how to express the collection within this special medium as best as possible. After shooting with a high speed camera I did all stages of post production, from 3D to motion graphics to compositing.
The result was one of the biggest holographic projections ever which creates a complete optical illusion and breaks the rules of time and space on stage.”

Vincent Haycock: Music Videos

Logan director Vincent Haycock recently finished up this music video for Calvin Harris’ Bounce … After being bounced by his girlfriend a hipster decides to, uhm, bounce through Vegas. Vincent makes a cameo himself near the end … this is the first of four music videos Vincent will be directing for Calvin Harris’ new album.

That also led me to this:

Vincent Haycock directed music video for Jamie Woon’s Lady Luck. Emotional vibes tearing up the city around her … love the original play of live action and cg.

Rogier van der Zwaag: Nobody Beats the Drum

Rogier van der Zwaag directed this amazing stop motion music video for Nobody Beats the Drum‘s track Poisson Vert. “We made this one in a forest, shot most of it in 7 (long) nights and after that I made some inserts of tunnels and bushes in a studio.” Really love the dynamic play of light and shadow, turned out great.
