Impressive new Effects reel from Miguel A. Salek.
Not to Scale directors Ubik created these three 30: stop motion commercials for SAGA. The three commercials promote SAGA cruises, holidays and car Insurance.
The directors created all the photographs. Actors, sets and 3D items were shot by Ollie Downie, using a Canon 5D. A production line was then set up to composite the elements using photoshop and after effects, and the image sequences were printed as photographs, ready to be shot on the tabletops. You can watch all three spots here.
Ubik precisely planned the layouts and timings for each spot. The three wooden surfaces were lit by DOP Simon Paul and the camera was positioned at a carefully measured height and angle to ensure all items were clearly visible. Ubik then worked with their experienced team of stop motion animators to painstakingly shoot every photograph and object frame by frame. Throughout all 3 commercials a selection of 2D elements transform into animated 3D objects: props and bespoke models. Clever transitions were created to get from one scene to the next so that all 3 commercials could be created in one shot.
The final post: cleaning up shots, rig removal and colour correction, were carried out in after effects at Not To Scale’s studio. Tim Waller at Molinare then graded the commercials.
The Art of Drowning by Diego Maclean, is equal parts awesome animation and awesome story.
Check out the growing collection of typographic work on Type Union.
From the site:
“Type Union is a place for anyone to share their typographic work. You don’t have to be a member and you don’t have to be a world-famous designer; if it’s good, submit!
That means anything, from a killer notebook sketch to a mural. We only ask that you design it yourself.”
NY, LA and London based Brand New School have launched a brand new site. The site launched in beta mode during the recent holidays, and yesterday, BNS’ nJonathan Notaro and his colleagues are inviting everyone to please visit, provide feedback, and share in the fun. The site has also already been nominated for a Favourite Website Award (FWA); to cast your vote, please visit http://www.thefwa.com/submissions/brandnewschool-com
As explained in our story below, the new site was developed by NYC-based Linked by Air, a firm that specializes in arts and cultural clientele. The innovative new site for Brand New School joins the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale University School of Art and the Environmental Performance Index in Linked by Air’s prestigious portfolio.
Here’s an excerpt from Jonathan’s take on the new site: “The practical side of me loves the Reels feature, which allows anyone to collect our work, build reels with different themes, and share them via email and other social media streams. The more playful side of me loves the ‘Bits,’ which allows us to put bits of inspiration or artwork we’ve made on the shelves for everyone to see. This feature is already inspiring us in new ways, and proving to be a very fun way to get to know more about our people.”
NY based Tronic Studio created A Brick Tree Grows in London, for Santander Bank.
Tronic artists conducted extensive design research to find the formula to make the tree “feel” comfortable to the people in the environment. “Every element, from the texture of the trunk and branches to the shape of the leaves and their candy-coated crystalline quality, to the expressions on people’s faces as they encounter the magical tree, were carefully scrutinized. We asked ourselves, ‘is this scary or is this welcoming?’ as we sought to make the tree appear as soft and gentle as possible,” added Dade Orgeron, Tronic creative director.
London based double g studios won a competitive pitch to direct and animate 20 energetic idents for Channel 4′s T4. The personality of each robot was enhanced through costume design, choreography and their relationship with the new 3d logos. Here’s a mash up from the 20.

byDiddo is a Dutch designer/art director and artist who steers clear of traditional approaches and tries to blur boundaries between art, design, architecture, fashion, photography and product design as often as he can. We posted his amazing wetsuit designs quite awhile ago and now he has updated again with several more great works, inlcuding these fashion protection Haute Couture masks …. also love his most recent project: Champagne – Extinguisher which was inspired by this Jim Morrison quote: “I just want to get my kicks before the whole shit house goes up in flames.” Perfect!
London based animator Sebastian Baptista starts off the new year with this short animation collaborating with Climent Canal … “Whatever you do, always try to be the best you can be. Spread the word and good luck.” Nice work.
London based, Nexus Productions‘ directors Smith & Foulkes created this new spot for Intel’s new Core i5 processor. Using a mix of live action and animation, Smith & Foulkes got insider tips from their DOP, Oliver Wood, of Bourne trilogy, to create this action sequence. Adam and Alan brought the full force of their animation directing expertise to the piece, with the action taking place in a series of software windows which open at full pelt.
Alan Smith: “We often combine live action with animation within the same scene, but here we had to continually jump from one to the other without losing the impact of the action or interrupting the narrative thread. Instead of editing from scene to scene in live action, we would cut from software window to new software window.” … “The fast-cutting, all out action of the iconic cinematic chase sequence was the perfect set piece for this fantastic brief. So we didn’t get to shoot exploding cars on the streets of Prague, but who knows … maybe next time…”
The result is a fantastically clever illustration of the Intel processor working at maximum capacity, as we career through the film following the heroine’s frantic dash through a myriad of windows in her bid to outwit the baddies – Youtube, Flikr, Google – all play their part in showing just what the Core i5 can do.
Portland based Designer/Illustrator Matt W. Moore, aka MWM Graphics, updated with new works including this new poster series: Vectorfunk Rorschach.
A belated Happy New Year video from one of my favourite motion designers, Gkaster who appears to have become Bright Photon. Lots of great work to see.
I have been anxiously waiting to post this since I first saw it a few weeks ago, and now I’m finally able to present the goodness. Charlex has turned the screws hard on this one, and it is absolutely beautiful. I think it’s gonna be a great year for those guys–but for now, go forth and enjoy Shapeshifter!
