Zeitguised made a piece in six acts for the opening exhibition at the Zirkel Gallery. It entails six imaginations of disoriented systems that take a catastrophic turn, including the evolution of educational plant-body-machine models and liquid building materials.

Crush inc: Douglas Coupland ~ Generation A
Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
Generation A is the follow up novel to Douglas Coupland’s 1991 cult hit Generation X. As with the campaign for his 2007 novel The Gum Thief, Random House Canada again came to Crush, Toronto to create a series of films. Last time it was nine films, this time it’s three – “10 Question for Douglas Couplandâ€, “The Tragic Death of the Channel Three News Team†and “Colour Samplesâ€.
Crush Creative Director Gary Thomas, “In both campaigns we let the content of the books drive our creative. The books are quite different, structurally and thematically. We had Doug this time, and since the characters in Generation A are all isolated and asked a series of seemingly random questions by a disembodied voice, we decided to subject Doug to the same experience.”

The Mill: Nature Sweet
Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
The Mill’s crew tech-scouted in Guadalajara, Mexico, where they enlisted the help of local DP/Photographer Michel Amado Carpio. “Michel took time-lapse photography for us for 22 days which served as reference for our animation,†Smith explains. “We analyzed the results to figure out how the plants actually grew. We also used some of it as background plates for the final composite.â€
Although the agency’s animatic was one shot, the pre-vis suggested that cuts and macro photography would yield more beautiful photography. “We did animation blocking using simple geography to ascertain how it could work editorially,” Smith explains.
The Mill’s Flame Artist, Naomi Anderlini, “Bokeh was simulated by layering a combination of live action time-lapse and CG time-lapse processed through varied results of Rack Defocus sparks,†Anderlini explains. “A combination of live-action particles and CG particles were added to the environment, to create a greater sense of this shallow depth of field … we hand-edited the sequences in Flame to create a stop-motion feel, and added flicker … chromatic aberration, lens distortion, live-action flares, and layers of glows, all contributed to the beauty of the final composites, and were handled quite delicately in Flame to achieve the result we’d envisioned.â€
